8 Health and Wellness Tips for Fall

Have you noticed the days getting shorter and the weather getting cooler where you live? Fall is just around the corner, which makes this a great time to ramp up your health and wellness routine.  Try these tips to help you feel happy and healthy all season long.

Eat with the season. Our bodies have different nutritional needs at different times of the year, providing us with more energy and preventing us from getting sick.  Warm up with a bowl of soup or choose squash, root vegetables and greens, which are all in season right now.

Enjoy outdoor activities.  Just because it’s getting colder doesn’t mean you can’t stay active and take advantage of your time outside. Picking apples, raking leaves or taking a hike to admire the foliage are all great forms of exercise that will get you in the mood for fall.

Adjust your sleep cycle.  As the days get shorter, you might start to feel more tired, irritable or a lack of energy.  Instead of fighting the change of the seasons, embrace it by going to bed earlier and getting more sleep this time of year.

Switch to tea.  Pumpkin spice lattes are still the rage but also come loaded with sugar, fat and empty calories.  Try tea spiced with cinnamon, clove and citrus for a warm, seasonal beverage that also provides an antioxidant boost.

Get a flu shot.  Flu season seems to get worse and worse every year and the last thing you want is to be stuck home sick.  It’s especially important for children, the elderly and people with asthma or allergies to get immunized since they are more vulnerable to dangerous complications from the flu.

Stay hydrated.  We naturally drink more water when it’s hot and humid but adequate hydration is important all year round.  Carry a water bottle with you and make a point to sip from it often.

Dress in layers.  The weather can be unpredictable and change quickly this time of year, so a layered approach allows you to easily adapt your wardrobe as needed.  Pulling out your sweaters, scarves and hats can also be a fun way to get excited about fall!

Boost your immunity.  As kids head back to school and holiday gatherings begin, it’s more important than ever to protect your health.  Wash your hands frequently, stay home when you’re sick and make sure you’re consuming extra vitamins and minerals.

We talk a lot about the experience of staying in a PURE Wellness Room and the benefits these rooms bring to your health and wellbeing.  I’d also like to tell you a little more about the PURE process and the science behind it, specifically our biostatic shield technology.  The PURE system has been clinically proven to reduce exposure to irritants and it can be helpful to better understand how this works to protect your health.

When our technicians convert a standard hotel room to a PURE Room, one step in the process is the application of a biostatic shield to all hard surfaces.  The shield is applied as a water-based spray that clings to both porous and non-porous materials.  Though you can’t see it once it’s dried, this biostatic shield has a big impact in preventing the growth of microbes like mold, viruses and bacteria in our rooms.

The biostatic shield creates a layer of countless invisible “spikes” that are about one-thousandth the width of a human hair.  When microbes land on the surface, these spikes rupture the cell wall and kill the organism.  By coating all hard surfaces with this shield, PURE Rooms provide lasting protection against germs since it is effectively impossible for them to survive on these surfaces.

Most of us take for granted that sanitizers and other cleaners are the only way to eliminate viruses and bacteria in the environment.  But these traditional cleaning methods rely on harsh, toxic chemicals that are harmful to us as well.  In fact, chemical cleaners can also cause microbes to adapt and develop immune resistance.  There is growing evidence suggesting that these “superbugs” are becoming stronger and more resistant to antibiotics, in part because of the widespread use of sanitizing chemicals.

By using a manual rather than a chemical process, biostatic technology represents a paradigm shift in how we think about cleaning and sanitizing.  This is the first truly safe and effective solution for long-term antimicrobial protection.  Biostatic sanitation has already been approved for use on airlines by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) so look for this technology to be used in more places in the future.

What does the biostatic shield mean for you?  This advanced technology provides superior protection against irritants without the use of harmful chemicals, creating a healthier and fresher experience every time you stay in a PURE Room.  See for yourself the difference our biostatic shield makes!

We all know that sleep is important for our health.  A lack of sleep has been associated with everything from anxiety and decreased productivity to cancer and diabetes.  Several new studies have now also made a link to heart attack and stroke, suggesting that adequate sleep may help reduce cardiovascular health risks.

In the first study, researchers found that people averaging less than 6 hours of sleep per night were 11% more likely to die from either a heart attack or stroke. Another group of scientists found in a separate study that individuals in this category had 27% more atherosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries that can lead to blockage and an increased risk of stroke, heart failure and aneurysm.  A third study similarly found that men who got less than 5 hours of sleep per night were twice as likely to have a serious cardiovascular event during their lifetime, making it a risk factor on par with smoking and diabetes.

The precise link between sleep and heart health is not clear, in part because sleep deprivation is also connected to a variety of other adverse health risks. Researchers have found that a lack of sleep causes changes in the genes that impair metabolism and promote diabetes. Other research has made a connection to inflammation, which may also contribute to the risk of heart disease.

While there has not yet been a causal link made between a lack of sleep and cardiovascular problems, the association between these factors suggests that getting enough sleep each night is good for heart health.  If you’re looking for another reason to prioritize more and better sleep, protecting your heart is an important one.

Many people struggle with sleep but there are ways you can ensure you’re getting the recommended 7-8 hours per night.  Stick to a regular bedtime and establish a consistent, relaxing routine that you follow leading up to it.  Turn off electronics such as your phone and the television at least one hour before you go to sleep to prevent overstimulation.  If you experience trouble sleeping multiple times per week, speak with your doctor about your experiences.

Sleep may seem like a luxury for many of us but it is a vital component in a healthy lifestyle.  Make sleep a part of your healthy living routine and you’ll find that you feel better and have more energy that you have before!
