Summer is right around the corner, so we’re starting to look forward to the warm and sunny vacations coming in the next few months. If you’re health and wellness-minded like we are, consider these tips to be your best on vacation this summer.

1. Avoid overpriced resorts, which are often crowded and limited in their offerings. Research slightly out-of-the-way destinations to save money and have a more authentic experience.

2. Look for national parks, campgrounds and other outdoor recreation.  These options are incredibly affordable and offer fun, healthy activities for everyone in the family.

3. Travel by train.  This is a great way to slow down, relax and enjoy your summer vacation experience.  Train travel is less expensive than air travel and is a great way to see the countryside.

4. Or take a road trip.  Family road trips are as American as apple pie and are another great way to save on expenses.  Be sure to take your time and plan frequent stops at sights and attractions along the way.

5. Pack an extra layer.  You may be tempted to pack only for hot and sunny weather but remember that conditions can change at even the balmiest destinations.  A light jacket and hat can be a lifesaver if it rains or temperatures drop overnight.

6. Be active.  Make use of the hotel gym, if you must, but also look for ways to stay fit that you might not try at home.  Kayaking, snorkeling and windsurfing are just a few fun activities that will also give you a great workout!

7. Walk when you can.  Ditch the rental car and spend as much time walking as possible.  This will not only keep you active but also help you slow down and experience the surrounding area.

8. Explore a farmer’s market.  These have sprung up just about everywhere, offering the freshest local produce direct from growers and farmers.  Stock up on healthy snacks and maybe try some new foods!

9. Plan a picnic.  It’s healthy, inexpensive and a great opportunity to spend time outside at your destination.

10. Take a break, especially if you’re traveling with children.  An afternoon nap or some downtime will help keep everyone well-rested and energized during the trip.
