For many people, the idea of wellness brings to mind images of yoga studios, kale salads and spa days. The truth is, it’s more than that.
The reality is that a positive and proactive approach to health is beneficial for everyone, especially men. In fact, men die younger and suffer from health problems like cancer and diabetes at higher rates than women, making the wellness concept even more important for men to understand and adopt.
In honor of Men’s Health Month, we’re bringing you our best tips to help men feel happier and healthier:
1. Lower your cholesterol. Men tend to have higher levels of cholesterol than women, which puts them at a greater risk for heart attacks and strokes. Along with exercise, a diet that is high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains will help bring down cholesterol naturally.
2. Reduce stress. Everyone deals with stress in their life, but many men are reluctant to take the time to do something about it. Breathing and meditation exercises can help but find your own ways to take out your frustrations and decompress.
3. Visit your doctor. Countless studies have shown that men are more likely than women to ignore symptoms and less likely to seek treatment. Schedule an annual physical and don’t be afraid to call your doctor if you think something might be wrong.
4. Fight cancer. Men are at a greater risk for both cancer and cancer-related death than women, which is another reason why it’s important to make regular appointments with your doctor. Early detection is key so watch out for changes in your body, including with a testicular self-exam.
5. Make time for friends. Demands at work and at home lead many men to isolate themselves from their peers. But research has shown that spending time with friends reduces stress and increases men’s confidence and wellbeing.
6. Learn to cook. We tend to think of cooking as too much work, which leads many men to rely heavily on unhealthy, processed foods. Start by mastering a few simple, nutritious recipes so you always have a healthy option available.
7. Ask for help when you need it. In general, men have a lower image of counseling and talking about feelings. But mental health is a critical issue for men that needs to be addressed by combating the stigma against opening up.
