Fall just might be the best time of year for travel.  From fewer crowds to off-season pricing, there are a lot of reasons why you’d want to plan a trip over the next few months.  But fall travel also brings a different set of concerns and challenges that you’ll want to consider.  Read on to learn how you can make the most of a family vacation or weekend getaway this fall.

  1. Pack for the season. Fall weather can change quickly and be difficult to predict. Be prepared by bringing items you can layer, which take up less space in your suitcase and allow you to easily adapt your wardrobe for the day’s forecast.

  1. Embrace the outdoors. Just because summer weather is behind us doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy the scenery and your favorite outdoor activities. A cool and crisp fall day can often be the most comfortable time to experience the environment at your destination.

  1. Prepare for allergy season. The fall ragweed season can be one of the hardest times of the year for people with asthma and allergies. Pollen counts spike at different times around the country based on climate and weather so check the forecast and plan to manage your symptoms, even if you’re not experiencing them at home.

  1. You don’t need to venture far. Fall travel doesn’t only mean foliage watching in New England or an off-season vacation to the Caribbean. You can find beautiful scenery, seasonal activities and fall events just about anywhere in the country, which is good to keep in mind when you’re making plans.

  1. Seek out local experiences. After the summer festivals and attractions have ended, it’s much easier to find and enjoy a more authentic side of your chosen destination. Take advantage of the lack of major events to explore local, daily life where you decide to visit.

  1. Be flexible with your plans. We all know that prices go up on weekends and during holidays like Thanksgiving and Columbus Day. To make the most of your fall travel experience, consider the benefit of lower fares and rates during off-peak travel times.

  1. Look for off-season deals. Of course, one of the best reasons for fall travel is bargain pricing at some of the best (and most expensive) destinations and attractions. Find out when prices drop at your preferred locations and make your travel plans around those dates.
