Happy World Sleep Day!  This annual holiday is organized by the World Sleep Society and has been celebrated every year since 2008.  The goal is to educate people about the problems caused by inadequate or insufficient sleep and to promote the benefits that healthy sleep provides.

Read on to learn about some ways that you can get involved today on World Sleep Day and help raise awareness about this important health issue.

Educate yourself.  For example, did you know that sleep deprivation costs the US around $400 billion each year?  The more you know about sleep and its impact on people’s lives, the better you’ll be able to advocate for healthy sleep.

Develop your sleep routine.  Experts agree that one of the best things you can do to improve your sleep quality is to establish a consistent routine every night before bed.  Find what works best for you, whether its a cup of herbal tea, reading or avoiding screen time an hour before bed.

Post on social media.  Most people know that sleep is important and yet they still don’t take the steps to ensure they’re getting enough of it. Help spread the word by sharing information about the benefits of healthy sleep and your favorite sleep tips.

Talk to kids about sleep.  Young people need more sleep than adults and this is especially important as they’re growing and developing their sleep habits.  Find ways to help kids understand why sleep is important and emphasize this by being a good sleep role model.

Discuss sleep with your doctor.  Sleep is a vital component of our overall health and yet many health care providers neglect to talk with patients about it.  Take the initiative by asking about your sleep patterns and raising any concerns or questions you may have.

Sleep!  No, that doesn’t mean you should celebrate by sleeping all day. Research shows that 
“binge” sleeping won’t help make up for lack of sleep.  But if you haven’t been getting the consistent, high-quality sleep your body needs, today is the perfect day to make sure you do.
