Travel can really take a toll on your health and wellbeing.  Even when you’re on vacation, the physical and mental rigors of travel as well as the disruption of your normal routine can leave you feeling tired and worn out.

But travel ought to be a rejuvenating experience.  It should be an opportunity to step back from daily life to reflect and to refresh your overall health and state of mind.  Try these tips during your next trip to get the most out of your time away from home and to be your best!

1. Use a small suitcase. These are easier to carry and help ensure you don’t overpack.

2. Choose wrinkle-free fabrics.  Dry cleaning and ironing while traveling is a hassle.  Materials that travel well save time and give you confidence that you always look and feel your best.

3. Wear comfortable shoes. Footwear will take up a lot of space in your luggage so if possible, put on a pair of versatile shoes you can wear for multiple occasions all day long.

4. Pack toiletries with you. Personal items like a toothbrush, moisturizer, eye drops and lip balm will keep you feeling fresh and comfortable during a long day of travel.

5. Carry a water bottle.  Even those of us who drink water religiously at home may neglect the importance of staying hydrated when we travel.

6. Take advantage of downtime. Instead of checking email or zoning out in front of a screen, get the most out of travel with activities for which you don’t normally have time.  Read, listen to music, meditate or catch up on some sleep!

7. Maintain your diet.  It’s easy to let your diet slip while you’re away from home.  Instead of restricting what you eat, seek out whole, nutritious foods that nourish your body and leave you feeling good.

8. Go grocery shopping. This is a great way to stay on track with your diet, save money and learn more about life in the community. You might even discover some local delicacies you didn’t know about!

9. Visit the local tourism office.  These folks are your best source for what’s happening in the area, including free events, the right restaurants, and off-the-beaten-path attractions.  Even when you’re traveling for business, the tourism office will help you know what to do during your free time.

10. Look for upgrades. Airlines and hotels are always trying to fill vacancies and if you are polite, you might be surprised at the perks and benefits you find.  It never hurts to ask!
