If you’re among the 50 million people with allergies or the 26 million people with asthma, you know that traveling can prove challenging. Differences in altitude, temperature and air-quality are just a few factors that can trigger serious asthma and allergy symptoms.

Because of this, it’s important for travelers to be prepared before and during their trip. Taking the following steps will help you prevent symptoms and know what to do should they occur.

Know your triggers. One of the best ways to prevent symptoms is to know what triggers them. Whether it’s pet dander, certain foods or cold weather, identifying these factors will help you avoid them when you’re in an unfamiliar place.

Check conditions at your destination. Start monitoring the weather, air quality and pollen forecast a week in advance so you’ll have an idea what to expect when you arrive.

Research local healthcare facilities such as pharmacies and hospitals. If your symptoms suddenly flare up or just need to fill a prescription, you’ll know ahead of time where to go.

Schedule a check-up with your doctor. This will give you an opportunity to update your asthma and allergy action plan, fill any prescriptions and ask questions about your specific itinerary.

Verify your health insurance information. You’ll also want to check that your insurance information is up-to-date and know your coverage options before you leave. Knowing you’re covered in case of an emergency will help put your mind at ease.

Research accommodations. Ask about pet and smoking policies, pools and your room’s proximity to the parking lot. Look for hotels that offer asthma and allergy-friendly Pure Rooms!

Carry medication with you in your purse or carry-on bag.  This will ensure you have easy access should you need them.

Don’t forget to pack the essentials, including your health insurance card, copies of your action plan and extra medications.

Bring along your favorite accessories that help you feel your best at home. These might include allergy-friendly pillowcases, an air diffuser, calming tea or other items.
