Whether you’re looking to purchase your first air purifier or upgrading to a new one, it can be challenging to decide which one is right for you. Air purifiers come with a wide array of features and can cost several hundred if not thousands of dollars. How can you know you’ll be getting the air purification you want without spending more than you need to?
Most importantly, you want to purchase a quality system that is effective and that will last. Consider an air purifier as an investment in your health that will continue providing benefits for years to come. There are inexpensive options but many of these either do not provide adequate filtration or will break down and need to be replaced.
To ensure you’re getting a high-quality purifier, first look for units that use HEPA filters. High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters are the only type fine enough to remove allergens like dust mite particles and pet dander. HEPA filters will not work properly in air purifiers that are not designed for them so make sure you choose a system that is approved for use with these filters.
HEPA filters also tend be more expensive than conventional ones and you’ll want to calculate the cost to replace them along with the frequency you’ll need to do so. Finally, air purifiers come with a range of additional features that may or may not be important to you, including timers, remote controls and maintenance indicators. Some now offer advanced features like dirt sensors that automatically adjust to the appropriate setting and ionizers, which help attract particles to the filter. Once you’ve narrowed your choices to purifiers that are durable, effective, quiet and efficient, you can decide which features matter to you and how much you’re willing to pay for them.
